I'm girlie - as if you haven't noticed - and I've been wanting a tutu for a while. I have aboslutely no where to wear a tutu - but that doesn't mean I can't put it on and clean the house while wearing it. If it makes doing laundry/cleaning the kitchen/vacuuming more fun/enjoyable, bring on the tutu! I looked up some patterns and it seemed totally simple, 100% no-sew. I bought a pattern, just in case, and I put "tutu" on my craft wish list.
And then Holly asked me to make her a "candy corn" tutu. Of course I said yes. When she was here, we got lots and lots of tulle to make our own tutus but we didn't get that far down our Big Craft Weekend list. She got tulle to make a Christmas tutu. I got black, magenta, and white (it will have a black and white polka dotted ribbon waist. Very Tracey.)
This gave me a good excuse to go back to Hobby Lobby - and I got 45 yards total of white, orange and yellow tulle. i didn't have the pattern with me, and I couldn't remember how much we got before - but I thought 15 yards of each color seemed like enough. (Right?) Apparently, I only needed 6.5 yards of each color - which worked out well because I threw away a lot in my first attemps at making this monstrosity.
Following the instructions of http://www.makeit-loveit.com/2009/01/want-to-make-your-own.html I proceeded to cut 2 in strips in each of the colors. What a pain in the ass that is. I'd like to think that I am better equipped than most. I do have quilting supplies that make it very easy to cut strips - I swear I could slice up my shoes with this rotary cutter. I got started at looping it around the waist. I wanted to try to do a layered look - like a candy corn (White - Orange - Yellow) so i cut the strips in 3 different lengths. I spent 3 hours cutting and looping and i wasn't pleased. I thought it looked kinda dumb. So i took it all off and tried again. Still looked dumb. So I took the piles of cut strips and shoved them in the trash and prepared to start all over again. I got my pattern out and spent a good HOUR cutting and layering big pieces of tulle. I had 35 layers - i put the pattern on top and then I cut the strips. I had a ginormous pile of strips. This seemed like a good place to start, again. I had faith, I was using the pattern after all.

This is probably a THIRD of what I cut. Think about how thin tulle is - this is a lot.
Several hours later:

I don't think it SCREAMS candy corn, but it is the appropriate candy corn colors. I kinda think it looks like fire, but that's just me. Also, Bill is a really good sport. He models all of my craft projects and he doesn't complain. I would also like to point out that this is his favorite lounging t-shirt, which would explain why he is always wearing it. And yes, it is clean.

I may need to cut a few inches off the bottom before I try to shove it in a box and mail it ("It's like trying to stuff a cream puff through a keyhole.") This is knee length - ON BILL - which means it's like a maxi dress on me and my short friend. Cutting some off the bottom might help it look less "nappy."
I'm onto my next project. Bill's Christmas stocking needs to get made - FINALLY. I found a kit (at Hobby Lobby, YEA!) and I need to start it so it will be finished by Christmas. Yep, there will be pics. ;)
